this but theens of thousands of robocalls went out about mr. weprin's vote on same sex marriage here in new york state. apparently, the robo calls portrayed his vote against a vote against god even though weprin is an orthodox jew himself. >> pete sessions is a chairman of the congressional committee and says new york have put washington democrats on notice. eric cantor calls it a major victory. this seems a little bit stronger than when the democrats won that seat in upstate new york about six months ago after a scandal forced the vacancy of that seat. again, very curious to see if they did some post poll analysis and talked to some people. how many people looked at what weiner did and how he embarrassed those people by what he did and said we're going with the republican. >> i don't know if that had so much to do about it. in that district, as far as registered voters democrats to republicans, 3-1. so did the democrats not show up? or did the republicans just all come out? i mean, when you're facing those kinds of odds of being able to

come out on top on that, many people pointing to the fact that israel was one of the main reasons he spent many times overseas with the bush administration in iraq, he said president obama is losing the jewish vote because of bad policies and anti-israel rhetoric and he talked specifically about the meetings that the president has had with benjamin netanyahu, the prime minister of israel, and maybe the disrespect that some believe that the president has shown netanyahu in these meetings and as far as not taking a stance with regard to israel over the palestinian authority and their ties to terrorist organizations, that some of that may now affect president obama in the election >> in particular, has really angered a number of new york jews is the fact that the president and the official white house position is, ok, if we're going to talk about peace and settling things over there, let's go back to those 1967 borders with mutually agreed to swaps and that's one of the reasons why one of the biggest

democrats in new york, ed koch, who was the mayor came out in favor of the republican. and he made a lot of phone calls and this morning, the republican has won. and it's not just in new york 9 which we should point out this is a seat that was hld by geraldine ferraro, it was held by chuck schumer and now mr. turner but there's also a big win for a republican out in nevada. >> forget about the fact that some people might have an opinion about the jewish vote and how it relates to president obama. inside israel, he has 9% approval. currently, among america, jewish voters right now only 22% approve of the job he's doing. how do you run from those numbers? the obama administration has a counter offensive. of course, debbie wasserman schultz is running the dnc. she said it's a messaging problem, not a policy problem. they've hired a jewish outreach director. they know there's an issue. there's no room for political games. they've lost turkey as an ally. they've lost egypt as an ally.

they are surround by terrorist organizations, this is the last thing our chief ally in the middle east needs is questioning our loyalty. >> let's go out to nevada, then, as steve mentioned there was a special election there where a republican won in a big way by 57.9% to 39% opponent, kate marshall. now there will be a big investigation into the failed green jobs energy company out in california. now, it's going to go back to the stimulus money and whether or not this company should have received $500 million in stimulus money in 2009. and now some e-mails have been -- and by the way, that company has since announced in the last two weeks it's going bankrupt. going out of business. >> yeah. >> so now these e-mails are being revealed between the white house, vice president biden's chief of staff to the office of management and budget who, by

the way, they needed that office that approve this $500 million loan. >> and these e-mails are now being published by abc and also "the washington post" and what's interesting and this is pretty much the headline in "the washington post" when you read the article this morning, it talks about how the administration was in such a hurry to announce that they were going to give half a billion dollars to solyndra, the omb was going back and forth and the office was leaning on the office of management and budget and they were the ones who were going to say whether or not this was a good deal, whether or not it was good risk and essentially what they were saying is let's approve this real fast because we have this joe biden photo op coming up and some are saying wait a minute, they blew it all across the board. >> $535 million of our money is gone! and now the f.b.i. went in on its own. here it is, this is the chief of staff, joe biden's chief of staff. he says "if you think this is a bad idea, i need to unwind the

west wing quickly." >> this is a bad idea to give the loan because vice president biden was going to be at the ground breaking for this company. that's why they were pushing it along. the white house budget analyst response to that e-mail, this deal is not ready for primetime. all right. so then, of course, you have the president there in 2010, may of that year, on how solyndra is going to lead the way for green jobs. listen to this. >> the true engine of economic growth will always be companies like solydra. companies like solyndra are leading the way towards a brighter and more prosperous future. >> that sounds really, really good. as it turns out, there were even a number of credit rating agencies back then that said, you know, are you sure you really want to give them that money? because it looks to us like they'll probably go bankrupt, they'll run out of money by september of 2011. >> they ran out of money the last day of august of 2011.

determines interest rates but is this good policy or just more washington politics? for more on this, we turn to fox business senior correspondent charles gasparino better known as charlie, better to see you this morning. is this a way for barney frank to get more political control of the fed? >> of course. listen, the fed has a dual mandate. fight inflation and promote growth. what he's saying by getting rid of these guys and making them appointees of the president, remember, those guys are elected from within. >> like czars. >> yeah, but they're elected from within. they're independent of politics. if they're appointed by the president, guess what? they'll be more likely to basically print money, to basically get rid of, ignore the one side of the dual mandate the inflation fighting side and promote growth and when you talk about growth with the fed, not talking about lowering taxes, we're not talking about fiscal policy. we're talking about printing money. keeping interest rates low. >> here's something that barney frank said as he rips the

current regional press, they said they're no longer elected or appointed by officials who are themselves elected. they're part of a self-perpetuating group who select each other and are treated as equals in studying federal monetary policy with officials appointed by the president. they've become political hacks? >> sounds pretty good. here's the description of it. independent, you know, not political. and he's against that. >> would they be appointed for life or for the term of that sitting president? >> i believe they're -- i believe they're appointed, they have six year terms. i could be wrong with this. but they're appointed from within. and listen, here's the whole thing. if you believe in the fed, ron paul and people like that, a lot of conservativ don't like the fed. they want to get rid it was and go back to a code standard, whatever. if you believe in the fed, you have to believe in the notion that the fed should be independent of politics. remember, they can print money. you don't want someone putting a hand on them forcing them to print money. >> jamie diamond, one of the biggest guys on wall street says

this regarding what's going on with the american banking system right now. i'm very close to thinking the united states shouldn't be in basil anymore, i would not have agreed to rules that are blatantly anti-american and our regulators should go there and say if it's not in the interest of the united states, we're not doing it. what basil is saying if you have to up the amount of cash in the kitty. >> right. there's a global banking regulation known as the basel accord and they're saying you need to up the amount of capital that you have on hand for a bank. by the way, that comes on top of dodd frank which is essentially forcing you to do the same thing. what jamie diamond is doing, a democrat, a guy that supported the president. supported democrats over the years, he's saying listen, your policies, the policies are killing the banking system. they're preventing us from lending to small business. >> but the big story here because most americans don't study whoever he is on a daily basis, this leader of j.p.

freed in a couple of days but a judge now says their bail deal set at $500,000 a piece is being reviewed. so hold the horses. and the brightest thing on the las vegas strip wasn't the casinos, it was this lightning strike. massive lightning bolts covering both ends of the strip yesterday. the lightning knocked out power for 6,000 customers. most of the lights are back on. 20 trees also caught on fire. wow. over to you. >> steve, after 20 hours, coalition forces battling taliban militants protecting the u.s. embassy and nato headquarters in kabul finally came to an end. the assault involved multiple suicide bombing attacks and rocket strikes. this is the latest in the taliban's attempt to maintain chaos in afghanistan. they've had a bunch of hits into the capital city through double figures in the summer. is this putting into question our trust in afghan's ability to police itself and secure itself. joining us right new to weigh in on this is the terrorism

correspondent for "the new york times" and co-author of this brand new book and it's excellent "counterstrike, the untold story of america's secret campaign against al-qaida." eric yesterday showed you what about where afghanistan is yesterday? >> what it showed is that the small number of determined militants can still slip through all the layers of defense that the united states and nato has put up around kabul. these guys are wearing suicide vests. obviously, they had some inside help to get as close as they did to the embassy and nato headquarters. got themselves perched up into building under construction and were able to open fire down upon these buildings launching both automatic weapons fire and rocket propelled grenades, took, as you said, 19 hours to put these guys down and even though this is a spectacular attack, it's not militarily significant but what it does, it shows it weakens trust in the afghan government and the afghan security forces to put this kind of strikes down. >> in reading your book, i understand how vital it's been to be in afghanistan, to understand what we're up against with al-qaida has a lot to do

with why we haven't been here. the other place we're in is iraq. your reaction to how our safety could be compromised as we go from 45,000 troops to 3,000 in six months. >> that's right, and it looks like right now, that's what defense secretary leon panetta is supporting, a proposal to bring u.s. troops down to just 3,000. probably a small training mission there. of course, this still has to be negotiated with the iraqis. this of course, puts much more responsibility for the security of that country back in the hands of the iraqi security forces at a time when the local al-qaida cell in iraq seems to be picking up again with attacks. >> all right. now, eric, in your book, you reveal for the first time a lot of innovative things. our finest are doing behind the scenes away from the applause and the spotlight to keep us safe. creative thing they're doing with super computers. they're hacking into conversations between terrorists posing as terrorists. >> that's right. one of the things we've found is the internet is basically the ultimate safe haven for these

but some of the proposals appeared to be a little over the top. jeff flock of fox business is in brown deer, wisconsin, in front of a bunch of the signs with the details. good morning to you, jeffrey. >> steve, good morning to you. we're at the traffic and parking control device company here in brown deer, wisconsin. i'll tell you, did you know that this sign is illegal? cinderella lane, maybe you don't like the name but it's the way that it's made. this is the old sign. it's illegal because it's not in upper and lower case, the transportation department came up with new regulations for the way street signs are supposed to be done and i'll tell you, they're pretty tight regulations. take a look at some of the regulations up there. they first of all must be upper and lower case. the first letter of each word must be capitalized. the size must be specific. it has to be 6 inches and 4 1/2 inches for the lower case. and if the mile per hour, speed

limit on a particular road is too high, they have to be even larger. that means that a sign like this, mineral springs boulevard, well, that's not upper and lower case. sorry, that one doesn't make it. this is the new sign. veterans park drive. why do we have all those things? well, because of something called the manual on uniform traffic control devices. lori, come over here, show them this. this is 816 pages without appendices by my read and all of this stuff in here is very specific about what should happen with regard to street signs. a lot of municipalities you can imagine pretty upset over having to spend money on these signs so a piece of good news, i leave you with, steve, and that's that the secretary of transportation, our old friend ray lahood got involved and said, listen, we shouldn't put deadlines on this. if the signs actually get old and get rusty and need to be replaced, ok, fine. then do them with the regulation but before then, you don't have to worry about it. so every once and a while, the federal government does get

referring to. he's just out as other republicans including governor romney have been either to do away with social security or to change it in ways that destroy it. >> mr. tanner, is it not true that when the money comes in and by the way, we're mandated to pay that money, is it not true that that money is used in different ways? it's not like it's sitting in some pot waiting for us to retire. >> in some ways, it's worse than a ponzi scheme because charles ponzi actually had to go out and talk people into voluntarily contributing to his program. social security forces people into a system. and when you pay your social security taxes, none of that money is putaway for your retirement. instead, you rely on the next generation of workers to pay taxes, self-support your retirement. they rely on the next generation behind them that will pay taxes and so on until ultimately the pyramid breaks down because you don't have enough taxpayers and you have too many retirees taking money out and you can't support the level of benefits that are promised. >> mr. roosevelt, when your

grandfather put this into effect, i believe the longevity of people living in the united states was the early 60's. in other words, we died a lot quicker. so we didn't need as much money. any business model that would look at this particular situation now with women living into their late 80's and men just shortly behind that, wouldn't any business change the way in which they do business as a result? >> social security has been amended 10 times to meet the changing demographics and the changing economy since 1935 when it was enacted. it's been extremely successful and mr. cantor knows very well that it's actuarily projected to be able to pay full benefits until 2037 and if we made no changes and we should make some small changes, if we made no changes, it could pay more than 3/4 of the projected benefits throughout the rest of the 21st century.

>> do you agee with that? >> well, that's cold comfort to a 30-year-old today who is only going to get 75% of what we promised to him. when you promise someone 100% and only pay him 75%, most people call that a lie. it lasts until 2037 only if you count the social security trust fund. we're running a deficit in social security today and surviving by taking money out of general revenues to repay the money we've borrowed from the trust fund so the system is basically insolvent as it is today. >> interesting discussion. glad to have the both of you. mike cantor and james roosevelt jr., thanks so much for sharing your time this morning. >> thank you. >> he's not running for president but this teen, did you see this? lots of people thought that he had the best line at the g.o.p. debate. watch this. >> my question is out of every dollar that i earn, how much do you think that i deserve to keep? >> well, that young man, his name is tyler hensley, he's going to join us next. hope he wrote down some

let's talk about this. there were special elections yesterday in new york and nevada and in both cases, the republicans win. let's go ahead and take a look at new york's ninth congressional district. bob turner who was in a district that has been -- has elected a democrat every two years since 1922. he beats the democrat. 54-46 which is about the margin that they predicted last week. >> and also out in nevada, the special election there, the republican wins, 57.9% against kate marshall, the challenger 36%. so let's take a listen to the winners. >> if you think it's just a nevada thing, i heard a rumor some guy that's a lot older than i am got elected in new york today who is a republican in a district that didn't even have a republican. >> it's a historic race.

we've been asked by the people of this district to send a message to washington and i hope they hear it loud and clear. >> i think they did. it's hard to spin this one. >> that's right! >> this is the democratic area and this is an area that's gone to the democrat for the past eight decades. suddenly, a year away from the president trying to win re-election, a message is sent. 43% of those in that -- in that region that voted for bob turner disapproved of the president's policies and it seems as though one policy in particular, this administration's approach to israel, wrote about it in today's "wall street journal." remember, he was -- helped us with iraq and paul grammar and he's been a fox news contributor in the past. he says essentially president obama is losing the jewish vote which is almost unheard of in this country if you're a member of the democratic party because of his policies towards israel. >> main thing in this particular district which is 40% jewish, by the way, 71% of all the people in the district who were polled disagree with the

president's policies on israel. so even more so than they did on the economy. so it seems to be a dual message here. and also david weprin, the challenger, the democrat had voted in favor of allowing gay marriage in the state of new york over the last couple of months. and because orthodox jews, many of them conservative and catholics in this district. that could have been a factor. >> stuart rothenberg who is an independent analyst and talks aboutly on particulars a lot. he said "make no mistake about it, the albatross around weprin's neck is named obama." and debbie wasserman schultz who runs the dnc, she said, new york's ninth congressional district is a very difficult district for democrats. come on, you won it every year since 1922. when did it go -- >> that's not even good spin. is that the spin you got? they are going to -- the administration is already reacting. they're hiring a high level

jewish outreach director and look to see if the administration is now going to go all in and stopping the u.n. vote of palestinian statehood. >> coming up. >> that would result in the u.s. having to veto that and saudi arabia has told us you better not veto that. if the administration sees they might have a jewish problem when it comes to the voting, then they would take action. >> i didn't think about that point. that's extremely important because the u.n., of course, in session coming up right now so it's right around the corner. let's talk about where the president is today because, as you know after he released his jobs bill plan, he went to swing states. they were billed as states of republican leaders but in all essence, they're swing states for him as well. virginia, ohio and now going to north carolina today. he's going to a company called west star and he's talking about creating american jobs. the only problem is that the background people who went to this company maybe should have found out that they've been shipping a lot of these jobs actually to their plant in costa

rica. now, that could be a problem if the president is about to address them about creating jobs here at home. >> yeah. sure. so they are shipping jobs -- apparently on their web site or in the past couple of years ago, one of the head guys there at that company where the president is going to be speaking today when asked about why they're doing that, shipping jobs to other countries, apparently, it is to take advantage of low labor costs. and just a couple of months ago, the president of the united states went to cree which is the manufacturer of those l.e.d. lights and they have been shipping jobs off to china. did he take the canadian bus to go see that? that's amazing. i think his staff is totally letting him down. you can't expect the president of the united states to do a background check of where products are being manufactured. he knows the ceo of that company is a major donor of his and seems to make sense. again, that's an embarrassing situation the president had nothing to do with it. >> if the president wants to go

to one of the carolinas, go down to south carolina. go to charleston where boeing would like to open up this brand new -->> he can't go there. that's the big confusion about the union. >> that's a lot of american jobs right there and, of course, gretch, you're absolutely right. the story out there is the national labor relations board has cracked down on boeing and they say you can't open that plant in that nonunion state because you open it there for payback to what happened up in washington with union members. >> all rit. >> that would have been a good place to go! >> when we heard the president talk about his plan the other night, one of the phrases that he said over and over again was pass this bill to congress. pass this bill. he pretty much was saying you have to pass all the elements of the bill in which i am proposing. but one of his key advisors, david axelrod is apparently now doing interviews. is he saying that you don't have to maybe do the whole thing? here's his quote. this is actually president obama. obviously, if they pass parts of

it, i'm not going to veto those parts. i will sign it. but i will say, then, give me the rest. but then here's david axelrod about how, nope, nothing going to be broken apart. we want them to act now on this package. it's not an a la carte menu but a strategy to get this country moving. >> he's very clear, not an a la carte menu. so you got to wonder, who is running this strategy? is it the president? or is it david axelrod? >> is it a sitdown meal or fuddruckers where you go up and pick out certain items? >> i know the president laid it all out there as you do in any kind of a negotiation and then he probably would accept less than the whole thing but maybe they weren't all on line on their messaging. not sure. let's do the rest of the headlines right now for a wednesday. it could be a ticking time bomb on wheels. authorities searching desperately now for a stolen

fuel tanker loaded with 3,000 gallons of gasoline. the tanker just a little bit bigger than this one you see in the photo. it was stolen from the alger oil company in kent county, maryland. police say there's a small chance this could be part of a terror attempt. the tanker has a maryland license plate 310e03. if you see this tanker, please call police. after 20 hours, afghan forces finally ending the dead the assault on the u.s. embassy and nato headquarters in kabul, afghanistan. looks like u.s. forces to me there. the gunfire stopped. four soldiers and three civilians left dead. the taliban attack now raising concern over whether afghanistan forces can secure their own country as the united states starts to withdraw. congressional hearing will get

under way this morning on the bankrupt solar panel company solyndra and its relationship to the obama administration. a house subcommittee wants to know why the white house continued to push a $535 million stimulus loan to that company despite warning signs it was failing. newly uncovered e-mails show the white house closely monitored the loan process after it was red flagged. vice president joe biden's chief of staff wrote this. "if you guys think this is a bad idea, i need to unwind the west wing quickly." solyndra abruptly shut down and laid off 1100 workers two weeks ago and the f.b.i. raided the company last week. we showed you this amazing video yesterday. got to come to the tv and check this out. now we're hearing from the good samaritan who saved a man's life under that car. the accident happened near utah state university. 21-year-old brandon wright pinned under a bmw that plowed into his bike. that bike went into flames. a group of people, look at that. they rushed over, lifting the

car off the ground, pulling him out, saving his life. >> he remembered being under the car, spitting up blood and not being able to talk. and he says that he was really scared. >> at first, i did not realize that there was someone trapped underneath the car. it wasn't until people started gathering around the vehicle. >> wright has not yet seen this video. he is in stable condition with a lot of broken bones but amazingly, he's expected to be ok. what would you do in that situation? >> those are your headlines. >> they did the right thing. >> 25 people did the right thing. >> so that's an extraordinary video. also, the guy talking at the end was narrating the entire incident. >> it was very -- it's interesting, i heard a soundbite from the guy in one of those yellow shirts toward the back of the car, and hsaid it was so hot, we were pretty sure the car was about to explode. and even though they felt the car was about to explode, watch this guy, here's the guy, he's going to -- there he pulls the

navy seals dog remaining by his master's side during an emotional funeral. chief petty officer john tumelson was killed in a helicopter crash in afghanistan last month and his labrador retriever hawkeye captured the public's emotions by laying on the floor near the casket keeping a watchful eye. from davenport, iowa, this morning i'm joined by john's family, his mom kathy and his sisters and they're with us to help honor a true hero this morning. good morning to all three of you and my heart and my prayers and everything about everyone here at "fox & friends" feeling so horrible for you this morning. you're very bravto come on and talk about your beloved son this morning, kathy, and i'd love to give you the chance to honor his memory by telling us about his love for being a navy seal. >> well, he did really absolutely love everything he did, he loved the men he worked with. he loved what he was doing and he thought they were making such a difference in our world. but yet, even as dedicated as he

was, he still had time for family and friends. and we're going to miss him greatly but we feel like that that group has made a big difference in our world. >> christie or joy, i know as we look at this wonderful photo of your brother as we remember him, i know that he always wanted to be a navy seal. i guess your mom gave him some books when he was 15 and he just got hooked on the idea, right? >> yeah. he had that idea in his head and we think from the age of 13 or 14, mom was trying to encourage him to read and he started reading the richard marcinco books and from that moment on, he told us he was going to be a navy seal and he never let that leave his sights. he had a lot of obstacles to overcome and he never let it discourage him. he let it keep motivating every time something might come in his way that looked like he wasn't going to get where he wanted to go and he was so determined and like i said, just kept going after his dream. >> a lot has been made about this photo of his dog hawkeye laying next to his casket.

and i know that a lot of things have been said, kathy, that maybe are not exactly accurate and you wanted the opportunity to set the record straight about exactly what happened that day and what that photo means. >> he did dearly love his dog. john wasn't married. so somebody told us at the funeral that the reason he had a dog was he thought by the time he found a woman that would put up with him, he'd be too old to have kids. that's why he had his dog. educated in making arrangements for his funeral in the event something had happened, he wanted his dog at the funeral. and so the couple that the dog was staying with every time he deployed or when he was training, brought the dog to the funeral and had the dog lay by the casket and it was not true that the dog would not leave the casket or it is not true that the dog would not leave the

cemetery. when they brought the dog to our house, he did immediately go up to john's room and, you know, he -- john loved that dog. but there's a lot of navy seals that left so many loved ones behind and a lot of us are grieving. this was a pet. one of the moms -- one of the women, one of the wives was 7 1/2 months pregnant and there's a lot of people that are going to miss those guys. but are so proud of the job they did. >> uh-huh. and i know that dog now, according to john's will, is living with friends in texas. i get the name, though, hawkeye, he's from iowa so that must have been a shoutout to his home state as well being from minnesota, i recognize that. christie, i'd love to you to tell us about the award that your brother earned after his death. a purple heart and others. >> yeah. he earned purple heart and another bronze star which he had already earned a bronze star.

but, you know, that wasn't what it was about for john. you know, we're proud of that. but it was never a big deal, as a matter of fact when he earned his first bronze star, he called home and it was almost as if he rescued the neighbor cat from the tree, you know, he just -- it was his job. he just, you know, made pretty light of it. but yeah, some big honors there. >> kathy, i know that one of the things that was so important to your son was this amazing bond that he had with the other navy seals. and they trust each other implicitly, correct? >> that's correct. you know, they're all responsible for each other's lives and every e-mail we got from john was, you know, this was a great team. they're taking great care of me. we're making such a difference. we heard from him just a few hours before the accident and,

you know, he -- it was something he loved to do and felt that it was very important that he did and we kind of had understood a little bit about the bond these guys had but we had navy seals come to our home, we had their ves come. we had their parents come. we had friends from texas that came to our yard and they basically came and told us they were there to take care of us and they certainly did. they redid a room for us. we have a john shrine now. they painted, bought furniture, bought -- put pictures up of john. took my husband for rides, took him to the barber shop. got meals ready. put food away and mopped the floors at the end of the day and they really did take care of us in such a wonderful way. >> wow. before we say good-bye to you today, joy, i wanted to talk about the memorial fund that's been set up in your brother's honor. who will go to help?

>> right now, our first project is we are going to have a bronze statue, life sized bronze statue of john and hawkeye that will be displayed out at prairie park in our hometown. and then the rest of it is going to go to scholarships. and then we're also going to try to do some different projects to help other military families, you know, it was such a help to us in all of this time to have people that reached out and so we want to turn around and be able to do that. in john's honor as well and we'll do other things, you ow, we don't want it to be just about now, you know, 10 years from now, we want people to remember john's memory. so we have a web site set up, it's threeminutesout.org and you can find more information on that on the fox news web site. >> yes. it will be on our web site as well. foxandfriends.com. thank you so much for raising a wonderful hero and to christie and joy, to all three of you, so sorry for the amazing loss of your son but we remember him today. thank you so much and thank you

>> speaking of washington, laura ingraham joins us from the nation's capital. >> i'll see if you can get this joke. i cannot tell with complete certitude whether or not this was a rebuke of obama. wel well, anthony weiner, his seat went down in flames. 1922, that's the last time this went republican. turneri heard for so long, turner is not very polished. kind of an old guy and never been in politics before. he's kind of boring, right? but guess what wasn't boring, his message of economic empowerment and american renewal and a complete rebuke by him over the last several weeks of president obama. and his policies, his tone and his rhetoric. it's a stunning, stunning victory. >> but turner is a business guy. he has no problem being a polished politician. he's been on our couch before as soon as anthony weiner's scandal erupted. meanwhile, put your analyst hat on. if you're part of the

administration, you can't spin out the scott brown story out of massachusetts. if you're the administration, what message should they be getting? they write in today's "wall street journal" it's all about the jewish vote in a predominantly jewish area. >> i think it's an excellent point. it's right on the money. it's not just the economy. this is a heavily jewish district. remember, bob turner is a catholic conservative. ok? in a heavily jewish district. pulls out a big victory. this is a significant victory. it wasn't a squeaker. president obama's policy in the middle east has been muddled and more and more jewish-americans and jewish-american voters who like obama and have supported him are taking a second look and are deeply skeptical especially in a very politically connected place such as this district. i mean, they follow middle east politics. they understand it. israel feels like it can do nothing right in the eyes of the obama administration and hillary clinton, i mean, in my view, hillary clinton has been kind of m.i.a. in recent weeks on what's happening in israel. i mean, you don't even hear about whatever she's doing or saying and now, the palestinians are, perhaps, going to get a big

vote in the u.n. and we're, apparently, not able to influence that at all. >> interesting to see how that all plays out. apparently, hillary did disagree withdrawing down the troops in iraq but she was overruled on that. let's move on to another topic that has to do with the white house because apparently, more than $500 million in stimulus money went to this clean energy company out in california named solyndra. now they've gone belly up and a lot of people are wondering whether or not that taxpayer money was blown on a failed green jobs loan. what's your thoughts? >> well, it's not easy being green, gretchen, first of all and what we know now is that the -- the administration was clearly -- there's a bit of an internal war going on. during the process of approving this loan guarantee. remember, president obama went in may of 2010 and heralded this as a huge green jobs success. he's been talking about green jobs ad nasueum for the past 2

1/2 years. he went to solyndra and said this is a shining example. we now find out that ron clain who i know from a while ago, he is the vice president's chief of staff. he got wind of the fact that omb, the office of management and budget is how solyndra was measuring up with the traditional standard to measure the loan guarantees. he said you better unwind the west wing from this if you see this is going to be some proble apparently, the west wing was not unwound because the west wing and people in the obama administration, the president himself was intimately involved with monitoring who was happening at solyndra. i think the folks at omb are trying to cyi right now. they're putting out the e-mails right now, they said don't look at us. we raised red flags. we were concerned about this. >> the f.b.i. raided it last week. these e-mails are coming to light now. on top of that, there's a big president obama donor that's part of -- >> oh, yeah.

lines, you will hear about false claims as soon as they come up and we'll count on you to spread the truth to your friends and personal networks and let us know about new smears wherever you hear them. the people going on this site or at least twittering about it are actually twittering kind of funny things like how many people work there and are those created jobs or just saved jobs? what do you make of that? >> right. is this shovel ready? remember, they did something like this in the 2008 campaign, right, they had a rapid response operation. it was -- yeah, it was very high drama, very sophisticated. i think what we can take away from this, guys, is that there is -- thaurz a lot of desperation setting in in the obama campaign. if only they spent as many time re-examining their policies and their ideology as they do mounting this full frontal assault against anyone who questions them or their policies, to me, it just smacks of desperation. look all campaigns to do this to be fair. all campaigns have a rapid response operation but i think

>> welcome back, everyone. 15 minutes after the top of the hour. "new york times" columnist paul krugman made some outrageous comments in his blog on 9/11. here's what he said. "what happened after 9/11 was deeply shameful. fake heroes like bernie karick, rudy giuliani and yes, george w. bush raced to cash in on the horror." our next guest has now decid to go times-less and cancel his subscription. i can't claim that i wrote it. it was one of my esteemed producers that came up with that great line and joining us now is the former united states secretary of defense, donald

rumsfeld. you have a good sense of humor, right? >> well, i've never thought it was times-less. indeed, i must say when i read that, it was kind of a last straw for me. i remember "the new york times" in the old days when, you know, people liked scottie reston and bill sapphire used to write for them and now it's gotten to the point where they promote things like krugman and the outrageous repugnant things he says. as well as others and i decided that i could, in fact, go times-less, you're quite right. >> the interesting thing is after he wrote that very brief, opinionated column, he refused to have his readers comment on it which was kind of a telltale sign that he might get a mouthful. or an earful, i should say. you decided to tweet, though. and you tweeted after reading krugman's repugnant piece on 9/11, you canceled my subscription to "the new york times" this a.m. what kind of message are you

trying to send to them, mr. secretary? >> well, you know, i really wasn't sending any message. i started reading the sunday "new york times" in 1950 when i was in college. and over the decades, it has deteriorated and i decided i didn't want to provide my hard earned money to them to support something that was promoting things like krugman says and others. and it's just no longer a relevant newspaper by my standards. >> something people are concerned about after we had the 10th anniversary on 9/11, is the war on terror, i know you don't like the terminology and you argued with president bush to not call it a war because you knew it would be an ongoing thing and maybe not all about bullets, per se. but i'm interested in your thoughts. yesterday on this show was breaking news about nato headquarters and u.s. embassy under attack in kabul, afghanistan.

many people concerned with the u.s. troop draw down that the afghanis won't be able too do it on their own. your thoughts? >> my thought is, of course, i worry when our embassies are attacked anywhere in the world and you think of the fine people that represent our country all across the globe but a terrorist can attack anywhere, any time, using any technique and they do. they look for soft spots and go after them. what it tells us is several things. number one, it tells us that the terrorists are still out there, they're still active and there are radical islamists that are funding, training and recruiting people to kill innocent men, women and children. we have to be aware of that. i think it also says that eventually, the afghan government and people are going to have to build their own nation and take over for our forces and for the coalition and nato forces that are there. >> i got to ask you about this amazing election that happened

in the new york ninth district last night where a republican won, anthony weiner's congressional seat. first time in more than 80 years. many people say it had to do with our foreign policy regarding israel. i know you know coming up in united nations, the palestinian authority are going to be asked to be claimed their own state by the u.n. because talks have broken down with israel. how do you feel about that? can the obama administration now move in to take a stance on this? >> well, the obama administration has done a series of things over the past 2 1/2 years that indicated a -- that they wanted to also have a relationship with israel, that has been a close ally and friend of the united states. he has not only done that but he has been rude to netanyahu and refused to talk to him and not have a photograph with him and he's really changed the relationship in a way that i believe is terribly harmful and

unreasonable. i think that the united states' behavior in the united nations in not voting against the actions of other nations in the united nations which they criticize and chastise israel almost every year is unfortunate. >> well, we'll have to wait and see what happens. we'll pay close attention september 20th, i think, is that vote. always great to talk to you, donald rumsfeld. thanks for having a good sense of humor for us this morning and very serious comments. it's hard to forget what happened the last time cloris leachman was here. what will happen this time? stick around. she's next.

but they're thinking maybe they don't do it this time because obama is promoting it. give me a win, this isn't about giving me a win. this isn't about giving democrats or republicans a win. it's about giving the american people a win. >> the president visited a newly renovated school, his jobs plan envisions tens of thousands of school renovations to create jobs and better classrooms. but it would be paid for with higher taxes which senate republican leader mitch mcconnell says is a nonstarter. >> temporary stimulus to be paid for later by permanent tax hikes. so that when the dust clears, and the economy is no better off than it was after the first stimulus, folks find themselves with an even bigger tax bill than today. >> house majority leader eric cantor says there may be some parts of the plan that republicans can support. aides say the president will

said that. however, to just talk about your faith and say what you believe or what your background is, i don't see one bit of problem with that. not one. >> how do you feel about this? america for the most part knows very little about being a mormon. you have two mormons in the race on the g.o.p. side. do you think that should be a factor? whether it should or not, do you think it will be a factor? >> i think it will be a factor. i think honestly the big part of the country will look at that, people look at what people believe, a lot of people that matters to. i hope as a country we can look at what people can offer as a politician. that's what i hope, like that young man said, how much do you think i deserve to keep of what i make? those are the kinds of questions whether you're jewish, christian, mormon, no faith that i think you should be able to answer. >> how much of my money should you be able to keep? >> actually all of it. >> see, you did not duck the question. >> i'm just being honest. >> that's all i ask. >> would that be in character with your new role on good christian belles. we switched the last word or

morning, democrats call it an election earthquake, stunning victory for a retired media executive, bob turner, republican winning a seat vacated by democrat anthony weiner. ty hernandez, our own fox station at wnyw live in queens right in the district. tai, the earthquake happened. >> all right. good morning, guys. sorry, i had a little bit of trouble hearing you there. we're getting lots of people coming up asking the same question, but most people are going with the conventional wisdom here, citing president obama as the reason. we have a stunning democratic loss. this is a district where democrats outnumber republicans 3-1. they haven't elected a republican to represent this congressional district since the 1920's and here we have bob turner, a newcomer to politics winning the race pretty handily. by the latest count, 54% to 46%. people are saying whether they supported weprin or turner, they felt the president was a strong

factor here. even down to the issue of israel. a lot of people were surprised because david weprin, the democratic candidate is part of the orthodox jewish community, yet he wasn't able to convince people he was strong on israel because of his association with the democratic party. so a lot of people very fired up about this race. some hoping for a new beginning. others disappointed but in the end, a lot of repetition of the same theme here. national interests took priority over other districts here. >> thank you so much. steve, over to you. >> thank you very much, brian. with unemployment hovering above 9%, the president laid out a much anticipated jobs plan. but does it do enough to offer relief to the average american? will it put the country's jobless and there are millions back to work? personal finance expert, radio show host, extraordinare dave ramsey joins us from nashville. good morning to you. we get some e-mails that want

answers from you. alan from michigan says dave, i'm a small business owner and i don't agree with the president bribing me with a tax break to hire job candidates who have been out of work longer than others. what are your thoughts? sir? >> well, i think it's pretty obvious that the president has really good intentions but he can't help himself. he -- when he says small businesses, the answer on one hand, then on the other hand, he comes over here and does social engineering and tells small business people like me who i should hire. maybe that's my decision. so i think whether i hire someone who has been unemployed for three weeks or three years, a, it's my business and b, in either case, you took someone off the unemployment rolls so what does it matter? why does he have to stick his fingers into our business? >> yep, indeed. meanwhile, jack writes, i am debt free. 60 years old. recently laid off. and have sent out applications to 125 companies so far. no one will come to the phone to talk to me. do you have any suggestions? jack needs help.

>> jack, i'm 50 years old, 51 acally so you and i are kind of of the same generation. that program used to work. it doesn't work anymore. filling out applications and getting hired don't work anymore. you'll have to visit them in person. you'll have to go on a letter writing campaign. you're going to have to find people that you know that work inside those businesses already that you want to work for and get in touch with them. the days of sitting in front of a computer and filling out apps are over. >> indeed. mindy from pennsylvania says i'm considering going back to school to learn some new skills but do you think obama's jobs plan would be better route for me to take? i'll get training on the job? what about that suggestion? >> mindy, never arrange your career around a government program! you will always stunt your growth. you will always line yourself up for mediocrity. you go be who god intended you to be. you go in the marketplace and be excellent. if there happens to be training
